Using a Pump Bottle Nasal Spray

    Step-by-Step

13 steps in using nasal spray

Nasal sprays are liquid medicines or formulations that are meant to be sprayed in your nostrils. They act on the mucus lining of the nose to relieve inflammation. This helps relieve nasal stuffiness often caused by infections, allergies, or colds.

Nasal sprays can be pump bottles or pressurized bottles. Some are bought over the counter. Others are prescribed by your healthcare provider. Talk with your provider about what type to use, why you need one, and how to use it. Read and follow instructions on the bottle as well.

Before you use the nasal spray, gently blow your nose to clear mucus in your nostrils. Be sure you can sniff air through each nostril before spraying so the medicine goes into your nose.

Try not to sneeze or blow your nose right after you use the spray.

Store the bottle away from sunlight.
